  Morning Musings

Good morning, good buddies. How are you this wonderful Sunday morning? It is just a bit cool this morning--so cool that hubby set the heat to kick on at 70 and that it did and has been running some.

I have been up since long before dawn and have a beautiful coffee cake made for hubby and son if they ever decide to leave the warmth of their beds. I have also cooked green beans with shallots, garlic and pancetta and have steaks soaking up all the favors of the marinade. I'll get them out in a few hours, let them come to room temperature, then grill. I want to do something with potatoes, but I haven't decided what. I may just bake them since steak and baked potatoes are so very yummy.

I went shopping yesterday with my daughter, bought her and my grandson each a winter coat. Poor babies didn't have a thing to keep out the winter chill. I also bought her a couple of pairs of jeans and a vacuum. We had lunch at Pasta House, a new one built across from the mall with a fantasic atmosphere. We really enjoyed ourselves, only talking about good things, laughing and acting crazy. I needed a day away from my normal routine of work, work, work and no play.

Fort Massac is having their annual encampment with fife players, drummers, people in rich attire of the early period. Booths of all kinds representing the lost arts of candle making, quilting and all other skills that have become lost or quaint from our progress beckon us to return to that time in history.

Fort Massac is located on the Ohio River in the town of Metropolis, the home of Superman. Their paper is called the Daily Planet, of course. There is a hugh statue of Superman right in front of the court house. Metropolis is also a home to Harrah's, the gambling casino. You would be amazed at the amount of tourists that visit the home of Superman, Harrah's and also Fort Massac

Well, I must see to my family. They have finally decided to grace me with their presence. I hope that all have a wonderful, restful day.

Thanks for the history lesson Angie. I'll have to visit that area some day. My roots came through Southern Illinois. They were wanderers... they came through a lot of States.

Where there is a casino, Mr. Troutbend will be glad to take me. We're looking forward to a road trip through the mid states next spring, so I'll put it on the list.

Well, there you go. You and I could visit while he figures out the video poker machines.

Good deal. Let me know when you plan to visit, and I will cook you a nice meal and show you some of the sights if you wish!

Wow You have been very busy! How did the steaks turn out? The dinner you prepared sounds delicious! What you did for your daughter and grandson was so nice. It sounds like you folks had a wonderful time together.

They did very well. We gathered around the table like hogs around a slop bucket. We really did have a great time. It is nice to be able to enjoy her for a change.

I will have to think of a side visit to Ft. Massac next time I am in Illinois. I'll bet my grandkids would love it.

I'm sure that they would. Just be sure to plan the trip during the encampment, truly amazing. Of course, I love history and find these types of events to my liking.

I did for sure. I even managed to take a little nap in the late afternoon so that I was rested for CNN and Headline News. I have been working on my veggie diet!

Sounds like Fort Massac would provide a really fun and educational outing. I love stuff like that. Enjoy your steaks. Annie :o)

It is. When Lewis and Clark came through this area, it was pretty rugged and swampy. Malaria hit the expedition pretty hard. There is so much history in Southern Illinois--the trail of tears and the fact that it was called Little Egypt, for its rich fertile land joining the two rivers, Ohio and Mississipi.

I know the feeling. Sometimes, I have to check on Larry to make sure that he is breathing.

Fort Massac sounds like an interesting place to visit.

Play time is good time

Absolutely! If you enjoy history--I like to visit old cemeteries also--you would enjoy the encampment and the sights and smells of colonial days.

Oh, that dinner sounds good!I just bought Michael a Superman costume for Halloween...think it's too far for us to go trick or treating up in Fort Massac?

Just pack a bag and plan to spend a few weeks-bring Don and the girls, of course. We will party hearty!
