  The End of the Road

Most of you know the struggles we have had with JR's truck. You know... the brand new Volvo 880 truck that he bought a couple of years ago that spends more time in the shop than on the road.

This morning it broke down in New Mexico. The fan went through the radiator or something like that. We have had this front end noise and it has been in 3 times for that noise, but they didn't fix the right thing because the noise just kept getting worse and today it blew up with fan parts flying everywhere.

The truck only has 250,000 miles and has had 5 new turbo's, 2 entirely new electrical systems, the computer been replaced 2 or 3 times, and just three weeks ago, the rear-end had to be rebuilt. There is more stuff, but I can't list it all. I can say it has had 66 major repairs since we bought it brand new, 2 1/2 years ago. And... Volvo has every repair on their computer system and we have a copy.... pages of copies.

I contacted the Volvo truck headquarters this morning and told them they had to work something out with us because we are through with this truck. We aren't making another payment and we will get an attorney if they don't work out something fair for us.

So you see.... it is a rather upsetting situation. It will take awhile to resolve it and I am praying that JR can handle the stress. His blood pressure has been continuing to go up the last few weeks and is out of control. I'm really worried what this latest crises will do to him.

Anyhow... remember us in your thoughts and prayers.

Annie :o)

Should have got a Peterbilt or a Kenworth. Especially Kenworth. It is based in the Northwest. Buy American. Best of luck to you.

Thanks draco. In crash tests... Volvo is still the safest and gives the smoothest ride, which is important when spending days and weeks on the road.

I'm just fuming over this mess, Annie. I would get a consumer protection lawyer and file suit. What a piece of junk!

I just Googled "Volvo Truck Problems" and I wish you would check out this link: — read on:

Problems have been reported with Volvo trucks suspension and other items.
"On March 21, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, on behalf of its members, filed a petition with the Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requesting the DOT and NHTSA investigate defects in Volvo trucks as reported by 185 owners of more than 260 Volvo Class 8 trucks. OOIDA says the petition was filed after numerous attempts to communicate with Volvo Trucks regarding the problems failed to yield results.

"The petition presents evidence that Volvo heavy-duty trucks manufactured between 1989 and 2000 may contain defects that pose the potential for loss of life and serious injury. OOIDA has collected complaints and evaluated evidence since 1999. Federal regulations require NHTSA to grant or deny petitions such as OOIDA's within 120 days.

"The vast majority of complaints concerned the front end of the truck. Sixty-seven complaints reported the incidence of severe vibration, shaking and noise centered in the front of the truck. Seventeen complaints reported trouble steering and controlling the truck. Several Volvo owners have discovered that their truck is overweight on the steering axle, even when not hitched to a loaded trailer.

"Many other problems were reported that may be caused by the truck's shaking and vibrating. These include various parts wearing out prematurely, various parts failing and falling off the truck, and the electrical system malfunctioning. With regard to the truck's body, windows have blown out, and doors and hoods have failed to shut properly. With one driver, a steering wheel fell off while at a loading dock. Whether these truck components may be defective themselves, or their failure may be a result of a chain reaction derived from a larger problem is one of the questions OOIDA asks NHTSA to investigate.

"Some Volvo owners reported only their mechanical problems; others described incidents in the operation of their truck that created hazardous conditions on the road or highway. In the petition, OOIDA excerpts comments made by Volvo mechanics and dealers to Volvo owners. These comments demonstrate that the problems reported are not isolated incidents but have been experienced by other Volvo owners. " http://www.ooida.com/at_issue/misc/volvo_waiting.htm

Apparently, you are not alone fighting this. Believe me, you and JR are in my thoughts and prayers.

Great job marta...I can't even imagine how much one of these cost too?
reply by strider333 on July 21, 2009 7:44 PM ()
Thank you marta for the research. JR meets these people all of the time on the road and especially in the repair shops. Since it was the 4th of July weekend, not much has happened on our claims. But, today, Volvo as for certain information from us and we are providing what they have requested. There will be a meeting and they are to determine what action they will take. I'll let you know what they decide. Until then, we just wait and hold our breath. Thanks again marta. I'll send this link to JR.

That's a ridiculous number of major repairs on a brand new truck! I will pray that Volvo gives you a great deal! I'm so sorry to hear about all this, Annie. ....I wish I could wave a magic wand and make all the difficulties you have been experiencing just go away...love you Annie!

Hi Jon - Just want you to know you are one of the great reasons I stick around on greasy.

I can see how that would be frustrating. I always thought Volvos were reliable. I think you took the right approach. I hope things work out well.

Hey... check out what Marta wrote above.

I'm so sorry to hear this because of all the stress you and JR have gone through and that truck has been such a disappointment. That poor man, like you say, I hope he can get through this latest. Did you see that Billy Mays probably died of a heart attack caused by high blood pressure? I'm sure you'll have to get an attorney. It seems like if Volvo was going to do something to help, it would have been before now.
comment by troutbend on June 30, 2009 10:52 AM ()
Yes, I saw that Billy Mays died of a heart attack. Sad... he was much too too young. Thanks for your concerns over the truck. With the 4th of July holiday, not much has happened, but maybe things will get on the move now. See Marta's reply above. She sent me a lot of info. Hope your 4th was great. I enjoyed my time with my sister and niece.

Do you have a Lemon Law in your state? They have one in Florida that has to replace your car if it has too many repairs in a certain period of time after purchase.I don't know if this would apply to trucks but worth looking into. You still are the hottest cow gal' on Greasy.Laurie
comment by dogsalot on June 30, 2009 9:21 AM ()
"the hottest cow gal' on greasy" Geez.... thanks. You just made my day. Marta sent me some Volvo info above... take a look. With the 4th, everyone has been on vacation and so nothing much has happened. Hopefully, this week the wheels will start rolling and we will get some action on the truck matter.

Hi Nenah - Hope you had a great 4th!!!! Now that the holiday is over and everyone is back from vacation, maybe Volvo can get to work on our situation. Please pray that we will get a good outcome.
