The Snow Pics the Transplants like to See

This is the kind of snow that folks usually want to see at Christmas time--the kind that hangs onto everything. Last night's precip was mixed with freezing rain, and broderline freezing temps resulting in what you see below. Branches are hanging low, but no powerlines are down (yet) that I know of. In other news, well, there really isn't any. Happy Spring! (it is coming!)

I Avoided the Insanity

We have an expression in the Fellowship that I believe originated with Einstein or somebody else just as famous: Insanity is do to the same behavior again and again and expect a different result. Ever notice how people do that sort of thing around the holidays? Invite the same guest who fell into the Christmas tree last year and expect him not to get drunk this year? It's not just alkies who fall into the Christmas tree, of course, it's also the products-of-poor-parenting who make the expe ...

I'm a Wal-mart Shopper But I'm Pissed!

We were shopping in Walmart yesterday when the cashier mentioned the lack of Christmas music over the store's speakers. Donna had witnessed rather rowdy behavior from a cranky old broad (older than us) and suggested that music of the season might have put the woman in a better mood. So I figured I'd look into the situation. I just called the store where we had shopped and was told that they had been playing Christmas music but stopped because they received complaints! Huh? Are we in Israel ...

The Thanks in Thanksgiving

On the assumption that giving thanks involves giving, we volunteered today to work the second shift at the community dinner! Unofficial estimate was that a hundred people had been served between noon and one o'clock when I took over at the carving station. I don't know what the total count was, but people were still coming in at 2:45--15 minutes before the event ended. The dinner was sponsored by the local churches and held at the fire hall. This is good, as far as volunteering, since not ...

Dinner After Dark - Depressing

The annual return to standard time seems to be the unofficial beginning of winter. The sun is already so far south that it spends most of the time behind the trees that line the driveway. The front window, (where I'm sitting now) will get a few direct rays for an hour or so this afternoon, but that's about it. The pasture outback was white this morning when I took the boyz out, but I didn't have my camera with me. The fog at the top of the slope was basically frozen and reflecting morning ...

Happy Bday, Maw

If you're not from The City, you probably wonder who maw is. Maybe it's "ma", in your part of the country, or "mama", or, well, you tell me. But anyway, she'd be 90 years old today if she was still alive. Hard to believe she's been dead for 15 years, that's more than a quarter of my life already that she's been gone. I didn't start drinking until I was 14, but that may nonetheless be the reason why I don't have as many memories (as most people do) of my childhood. My family wasn't well-off ...

Country Folk Can't Have Reliable Internet?

It must be about two weeks since I posted "Idiot Roofer". Fortunately the roof isn't leaking after I fixed it myself, although the master bathroom was (along with the kitchen sink). I have to put a new surround around the master tub and the kitchen sink leak is fixed (with the aid of the plumber), and I'm back online. We connected to the new ISP in the middle of September, and the damn thing was down already by last Tuesday. I kept calling and they kept explaining what the problem was, not ...

Idiot Roofer!

Complaints about roofers on greasy aren't uncommon. I can think of a few I've read in the past year or so. Next to getting a driveway paved, I think finding a respectable roofer is the next most difficult task. Last year we spent $1800 having a chimney reflashed--turns out that the idiot roofer who did the roofing job hadn't reflashed it at all. I had tried to get the SOB to come and fix a few leaks right after it was done, and he did fix a few. Then his phone number was no linger in servi ...

My New Sweetie..

Change is inevitable Before I had never seen her with a perm before, although she's had it done years ago. I figured I'd like it, although I like long and straight too. I guess it's a 60s thing. So between the missing 110 pounds over the last 16 months, and the new color in front, and the friz, she's remade! Now, the next order of business is to teach her to smile and keep her eyes open when she's being photographed.

Super Large and Edible!

One never knows how spoiled he (or she) is using high-speed until it isn't available and the only Internet connection available is dial-up. Our previous *high-speed* ISP was so unreliable that even when it was working, Netflix on-demand downloads would pause to be reprocessed to run at a slower speed. So at the end of the last billing cycle, we went back to dial-up for awhile. It turned out to be eight days until the guys from the local phone company came yesterday to install "THE PACKAGE" ...

Me? Old? Well ... .

You have probably read a blog or two from a fellow greaser who really began feeling old when he discovered that he needed a hearing aide. I could understand how a hearing aide could be a benchmark for old age for him, although that isn't something that would particularly concern me even tho I'm a whopping 3 weeks older than he is. Perhaps my lack of concern is because I've been wearing glasses since I was four years old and these kinds of "aides" don't represent any particular stage of lif ...

Photos, for My Own Pleasure (But You Can Look)

Donna has been taking a photography course this semester, and I've been reviewing her work before she submits it, and hopefully learning something as we go. We went to an art show over the weekend, and we payed special attention to the photographers. I took the camera out this afternoon, and attempted a few shots at angles other than what objects would usually be seen at. I had to get on the ground for a few shots of the coach (which I didn't post), and eye to eye with the boyz to get the ...

Attention Walmart Shoppers - M Y O B !

You probably know by now that we have two dogs. By coincidence, we also have to dog crates (aka, boxes). We also have a short bed pickup. And we also value the boyz and take the best care possible of them. So ah... We went to Wal-mart on the way home after doing a favor for Donna's friend, and I had both crates along since we had been away over night. One crate has solid sides with vents at the top and a gate on the front. The other crate is made completely of thin metal bars and is open t ...

My Mutt is Smarter Than Your First Grader (Almost)

Any dog person could have told you this, but here it is from CNN! By Doug Gross (CNN) -- Your dog may not actually be smarter than somebody's honor student -- popular bumper stickers aside. But your canine companion might well be smarter than their toddler, according to a growing body of research on how dogs think. Using adapted tests designed for human children, psychologists have learned that average dogs can count, reason and recognize words and gestures on par with a human 2 -year-old. ...

Effen Fungus!

Last month was the second wettest July on record. People around here planted all sorts of things from seed: cukes, carrots, beets... most of the seed rotted in the ground. I had some potatoes in the ground, along with some store-bought tomato plants that survived two frosts in early June, and some squash that is still alive. The temperature warmed up in the end of July and all the survivors were doing very well. We transplanted the tomatoes into large pots and put them on the front porch, ...

I've been thinking about this post since yesterday, and now that I'm home for the evening and have time to compose it, I've decided to go for it. If you think you know which "left one" I'm talking about, you are probably correct. I'm not talking legs or eyeballs (although that's getting close).
Fishing and Drinking: a Correlation!

A little while ago I replied to a post about catfish. I mentioned that I used to fish a lot in the drinking days, and although I carried a poll for years after on the rack in the old van, I rarely used it at the campground (or anywhere else). I also mentioned, without explanation, a stick in a bottle. So I'll explain that too. I have to say first off that it was amazing how I was able to clean fish the morning after with a wicked hangover. I'd often puke in the morning under normal conditi ...

Rain (And Other Things) But Mostly R a I N

Seems like I've been running my tail of since I got out of the hospital, and that must be three weeks ago by now. The property was a mess, with everything overgrown due to days of rain. The rain hasn't stopped, but at least we've been getting two or three nice days between downpours. A severe t-storm watch has been issued for this afternoon, but it's already so wet out since this morning's rain, that I wasn't planning to go outside today anyway.
