Evaluating Laws or Proposed Ones ...

When I evaluate a proposed law, a ballot voter proposition or a dispute of any kind that calls for my opinion or vote, I consider these two questions: 1. Can it cause me direct physical or financial harm? 2. Will it take away any rights that I and my fellow citizens now have? If the answer to one of those is YES, I oppose it. If the answer to both of those is NO, then I will support it.

What in Tarnation ... ?"

How come nobody says that anymore? And what was a 'tarnation,' anyway? Around here a common surprise remark is "My Land!" Occasionally you will hear the old "My Gosh!" I think the latter was an attempt to cover up the blasphemous "My God!" You never hear 'Blasphemy' any more, either. I suppose what is blasphemous to you may be proper form to others. I have a fondness for saying "See you," as a parting salute. It is the short version of the old "I'll be seeing you." The central character in ...

On a Roll ...

Later this week you will see the double entendre in the title to this post. Anyway, I signed another canvas tonight. Then I sketched out another one on a large canvas. Hobbes helped me, rubbing against my leg and trying to get up on my lap to help with the pencil work. It is another 'food' or 'pastry' series painting, only 20 inches tall and 16" wide. If the sun ever returns over Ohio I will take it out to the porch and photograph it. (You can't shoot pics of paintings indoor or the flash ...

Steps ...

Occasionally I teach painting classes at the Art Guild here. I usually have to promote and advertise the classes at least two months ahead in order to get the 7 or 8 students required before I can offer the class. The Art Guild must at least break even. The fees are usually (for my classes) $35 to $45 for a four-night over four weeks class. I usually do them Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. That works out to 12 hours of instruction (a little over 3 bucks per hour for a student. I get ...

A New 'Old' Direction ...

Chocolate Chip 24"w x 24"h Acrylic polymer on canvas $425.00 Double-thick stretcher. No frame required. I have been working on a new direction, going back over my painting history for inspiration. If you look at my 'OLD WORK' page on my web site, you will notice a few old photos of food items that I painted from 1973 to 1975. I abandoned that direction when I relocated to the west coast. Now I have picked it up again. For your information, I ate the cookie. http://www,jondude.com

Stand Up! ...

We are the Internet! We are bigger than the corporate lobby that wants the PIPA and SOPA laws passed. You know the Senators and Congress are almost all on the lobbyists' payrolls, but you are who elects and re-elects them, so call your Senators and your Congressperson today and remind them of that. STOP This madness. Keep the Internet free.

It's sad to see Newt Gingrich losing his mind in public. Too bad I can't simply block him and a few other of his fellow candidates with the remote, like I did to FOX "News" over a year ago. Oh well. Only ten and a half more months and they'll all go away again.

Our Old House ...

We lived (rented) the house in the 1950s. I "grew up" there. It caught fire last night. Several of the family (4) were flown to a Toledo hospital with smoke inhalation and some severe burns. A neighbor used his ladder to take a baby, a young child and the mother off the back balcony over the enclosed "summer kitchen." The family lost everything and there is a collection going on in Bascom for their benefit. Bascom is my Ohio home town. Five miles west of here.

No Debate About It ...

I heard there was a Republican debate tonight? WHAT? During that great football playoff game in New Orleans? How could they? What f**king nerve, to have a bunch of morons on a stage (none of whom will ever be elected) keeping all those poor viewers from seeing one of the most-fantastic-quarterbacks-ever completely blow away the Detroit Lions! What gall! It's almost un-American! SHAME! (I wonder if anybody even watched it.)

Rick Santorum's Best Quotes ...

1. Santorum has pledged to repeal all federal funding for contraception and allow the states to outlaw birth control, insisting that “it’s a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be.” (How are they "supposed to be?" And where's YOUR 'license,' Ricky?) 2. During an appearance on Christian television in January, Santorum said he was surprised that President Obama didn’t know when life began — given his skin color. “I find it almost r ...
