Alright, LOVING this pattern. But...Well, epic fail here. Im not sure what to do with the "Pick up and knit the 3 cast on sts at base of thumb, knit to end of row. (47 sts)" part. I got the thumb done, just fine. Is all wonderful. However, pick up stitches? You mean lift them off my lap? Ok. Now what? (kidding) Im obviously missing something obvious here. Maybe I missed a minor memo about knitting somewhere along the way. How do I pick them bakc up, and also...they are sort of in the middle of my knitting. Not on the end of a whole row. How do I get all forty-seven stitches involved in a row beginning in the middle? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I know it is now 2010 and you commented on this post all the way back in 2008 (so I hope you have finished these gloves!), but I am having the exact same problem you posted here. Despite reading what you wrote, I still do not know how to move on and pick up the stitches at the base of the thumb. Could you please make it incredibly simple for a simpleton like me and explain what you mean by:

"...Basically you just stick your needle through the three stitches. Then you put it all on the one needle, and start knitting. Now, how do you knit with no yarn? You don't. So you just grab the yarn and start knitting, leaving a bit of a tail where you started and then weave it in."

just stick your needle through?
which needle?

Looking forward to receiving much needed help! Thank you!

Hi -- I'm new to website and don't know how to ask the author of the pattern a question, so I'm writing to you. I'm finding the pattern difficult to interpret even tho I'm a very experienced knitter. You pick up the stitches as described and fold the finger just knitted in half to continue the row, then turn and purl back the indicated number of stitches. I got further than you, but then realized I was not going to have enough stitches to complete the little finger! I'd like to ask the author -- can you guide me to the right place to do so? Thanks, Maggie D

Got it. Basically you just stick your needle through the three stitches. Then you put it all on the one needle, and start knitting. Now, how do you knit with no yarn? You don't. So you just grab the yarn and start knitting, leaving a bit of a tail where you started and then weave it in.

I'm having this exact same trouble- i'm hoping that nittineedles swoops in and gives a really easy explanation :) i may have to give my son half of a glove still on the needles in his stocking...OHMY]

I very much like the idea of this, as I don't care for DPNs and have not got the hang of magic loop yet and how to translate glove into that. But I am having a problem visualizing how these come out before they are seemed up. If you happen to have a picture of one before you seam it I would love to see it. I think that might be helpful for me and hopefully others. Thank you for the pattern. (kimmypooh on ravelry)

After you have finished knitting the gloves but before you stitch them together the fingers join the back of the hand and palm together across the top and the outside (baby finger) of the glove is open. In other words, all you need to do is put a few stitches down one side of each finger and stitch the seam from the top of the baby finger to the bottom of the cuff.

They look great! I've never knit gloves before, only hats, with either circular plus dp needles or by using the magic loop or double circular needle method. Do you mean that you can knit these gloves on two regular needles? If so, are you basically finishing them by sewing up two halves of the glove and fingers? I'm not good at visualizing how patterns work. thanks!

Yes, they are knit with two regular needles. The seam is along the outside edge of the gloves (the inside edge being the thumb side). You're welcome.

This looks like a great pattern, but please explain what "pm" and "sm" mean? Thanks!

pm means place marker
sm means slip marker
If you have any trouble with any of my patterns just let me know.

Thanks! I will try this. My cousin in England who knits beautiful gloves makes them on two needles, so I know it can be done. When you increase like it says, does that mean knit in the front of the stitch, leave the yarn on the same needle, knit in the back of the stitch, and then push to the right-hand needle?

That's exactly how I do it.
