  New TV 20090120

Another thing that happened on Sun afternoon was I went shopping for a new TV. We have had the old one for less than ten years. It was practically new. We don't have cable, so use the broadcast channels, which means we will have an issue next month because our (now) old TV only had an analog tuner. Almost a year ago we bought a new DVD recorder, which has a digital tuner, so the problem was partially solved.

We had a choice: a new TV or a digital converter box.

We thought about it for a while, but finally bought a 32" HD TV. I figured now was the time to buy because TVs go on sale around the time of the football playoffs and Superbowl, which is in January some time. At the store they had a big wall of different TVs, ranging from the really big down to the "little" ones, the 37". I had to look on a small side aisle to find the group of 32" models I was looking for. Still more expensive than I wanted to spend, but didn't want to go smaller.

It works. Kitty was the first to try it out, after I had it connected and the channels programmed.

One of the items on the list Mon was to take the old TV to the recycle center. I had carefully loaded it into the car. At the recycle the guy pulled it out of the car and plucked it face down on the cart and wheeled it away. We generate so much trash.

The old one was outmoded, so had to be replaced.

Actually, it was out of date soon after we bought it, because the DVD players changed their outputs and that TV was behind then.

It is crazy how much trash we generate. Especially when you consider how quickly technology progresses and how so many people try to keep up. And unfortunately the recycling programs aren't keeping up with the pace.

We don't try to keep up and we still generate too much.

we do generate so much trash... think about all the individually wrapped items people purchase... and water bottles??? Yikes!
enjoy the new tv!

This hasn't changed since this article came out:

There's a trash gyre in the Atlantic too.

Yep, water bottles are scary.

Couldn't you have donated the TV to a second hand store or something? Then it wouldn't have been trash at all...

Happy TV watching.

The recycle center had quite a collection already.

I thought about that, but everything is going to be "flooded" with TVs in the coming weeks, so I didn't see the point in adding our defunct TV is the mass of them.

I don't much care what brand our next TV is but I can assure you it will be bigger than 20".

20" is pretty little when you watch something that's in 16:9 format. Lots of empty space.

Soundslike you did a great job in shopping smartly.

I hope so. I looked at a few different stores and checked reviews online, so it should be okay. The TV works

I'm sticking with my 8 year old tv and my cable box. Due to my apartment dwelling, dishes and antennas aren't possible. Rabbit ears were not an option either. Luckily I can write off a portion of my cable bill.

Enjoy the new tv. And the Super Bowl is Feb 1st... I only know that because it's the same day as my Surf City Half Marathon. LOL

Yeah, with cable it's not an issue. Keep the TV until it dies.

We are shopping for a new tv, too. Ours shuts off when we first try to turn it on. It takes several tries before we get it to stay on. One of these days, it probably just won't stay on. I'm not sure what we are going to buy yet. I blogged about this a few days ago and got several suggestions from other bloggers, so I at least have an idea of what I'm shopping for. If the sales are on now... I better get started.

I read that earlier today after you commented here.
